Feb 2010: Mares, Foals and Pernamax

17/02/2010 13:44:52

Many horses and ponies that rely on Pernamax tend to be older, suffering painful joints caused by injuries or old age. As well as helping soothe painful joints, Pernamax has also been used effectively on foals to help support growth.

Awkward and gangly are just a couple of words used to describe the knobbly limbs of growing foals. To maintain healthy development it is essential to support bone growth with the right nutrients. The key active ingredient in Pernamax Equine Tablets is SuPerna™, Maxavita’s patented powdered extract of the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel, which contains a unique profile of soothing Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids. With a natural anti-inflammatory action, Pernamax Equine Tablets can help to support the bones and joints of foals for healthy growth.
As well as supporting joints, Omega 3 Fatty Acids are believed to provide a range of health benefits, including maintaining a healthy heart and brain.

William and Juno
Classic Sovereign (William) is a 10 month old chestnut colt out of TB/ID mare Juno, sired by Hanovarian stallion Classic Juan. William has a bold and cheeky nature, which is a great sign for his prospects as a future event horse.

Juno was  stiff and tired looking in the field, not surprising with Little Willy and his boundless energy.  At times she looked like she was struggling to keep up when playing in the field, but being a good Mum was determined not let him get too far away.  At this point I turned to Maxavita for advice and expressed by concerns about Juno''''s way of going.  Their experts recommend I put her on Pernamax Equine Tablets.
I can honestly say I cannot believe the difference.  Little Willy is in the process of being weaned and we are so astounded by the difference in Juno she is going to be coming back into work with a talented young rider at the beginning of March.  So much for the horse we were going to retire!
I am so delighted with the effects of Pernamax that Little Willy is already a convert as I am determined to also give him the best start in life.

Fell

We featured twin Fell back in our November newsletter: Born with wonky legs, veterinary experts didn''''t think he had a chance, but owner Yvonne Bartram of Elysian Horses Stud refused to give up on her ''''miracle'''' foal.
(2nd photo taken in January 2010)
I called in my vet when the twins were two weeks old as I was really worried about Fell''s wonky front legs which were awful. Instead of straightening up as very often happens, they looked like ''Z''s and he could barely walk.  My vet took x-rays and he and a specialist orthopaedic surgeon told me that Fell''s bones had not formed in his knees at all and that "these are as bad as legs get". They said Fell wasn''t viable and that treatment would be thousands of pounds and, at best, a long shot and that I should put him down.  I refused to accept this. I felt we had been given a special gift and was prepared to fight for Fell.
I contacted Maxavita to ask if I could give Pernamax to Fell.  I had used the tablets and patches on horses (and my elderly father-in-law) very successfully in the past.  From this Maxavita very kindly offered to sponsor the twins and have been providing Pernamax for both twins.  We noticed an immediate improvement in Fell and the next day he was flying round the stable with his brother, braces or no braces!  We also put the twins on a handful of feed balancer at the time to ensure the correct nutrients were available to encourage bone growth but not too much weight.
My vet found some special corrective boots on the internet that he thought might help at a cost of £1000 each but in the meantime came out with a nurse and bandaged and braced Fell''s legs with guttering - which I tore off my stables and hack sawed to length as we needed them in a hurry! VetOptions from Ireland kindly sent me the boots and told me I could pay for them when I could raise funds. My vet came out week after week but the boots were far too big for Fell. While we were waiting for Fell to grow into the boots, my vet made his own articulated braces for Fell''s knees.
Further x-rays of Fell''s knees did indeed show that the bones had grown and his legs were starting to straighten up.  A few weeks later, unbelievably the vet declared that "he doesn''t need anything more on his legs, they are straight!"
If the vets are declaring this as amazing - remember they wanted me to put him down - then this miracle, as far as I am concerned, is down to Maxavita.  My vet says it''s down to Mother Nature - she didn''t hand him a very good start though did she?
My vet stayed with me and Fell and went to a lot of trouble when he didn''t agree with what I was doing at first.  I am so grateful to him and to Maxavita for their help and support in saving this little foal''s life.
