June 2010: Stay safe in the sun

22/06/2010 14:02:39

Summer is here at last!  For many of you that might mean a holiday abroad, a weekend away, or just relaxing at home with family. Whatever you get up to this summer, make sure that you and your pets stay hydrated and cool during hot weather.  Dogs, like people can suffer in the hot weather; following a few simple rules can help keep your dog a lot happier as the temperatures soar.

Maxavita''s tips on keeping safe this summer
  • It may seem like the most obvious thing, but don’t ever leave your dog in a hot car. Even parked in the shade, temperatures can reach 50 degrees Celsius on a hot day.
  • You wouldn’t go on a long walk without taking some water for yourself, so please don’t forget about your dog’s needs.
  • The hot weather brings out various different types of people. Be sure to keep your dog on a lead around crowds, cyclists and horses.
  • Older dogs feel the heat more, and a good tip is to cool them down gradually by soaking a towel in cold water, squeezing out the excess and putting it across their back. Repeated several times its a great way to cool down your dog in hot weather.
  • When walking your dog, try to chose the coolest time of day (early morning or late evening.)
  • Dogs are far better suited to staying indoors when it’s very hot out, in a ventilated cool area.
  • Ensure your dog has access to fresh, cold drinking water at all times. Many dogs will enjoy a paddling pool to cool down in!
